Academic Background
I completed my training as a MIR in Radiation Oncology at the Hospital 12 de Octubre in 1998.
I worked as a FEA at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital between 1999 and 2012. During this period, I focused on advanced techniques such as SBRT, being a founding member of the Spanish SBRT group and its national coordinator until 2015, responsible for implementing it in this hospital.
Additionally, I obtained my Doctorate in Medicine in 2005 from the Complutense University of Madrid. In 2005, I started private practice with the IMO group as Coordinator of the Tomotherapy Unit, being a national pioneer in implementing this technology until 2009.
Work Experience
In December 2012, I assumed the Head of the Radiation Oncology Department at the H. General de Ciudad Real until June 2015. During this period, I established the Tomotherapy and High-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy Unit for prostate and breast cancer, being a reference in advanced techniques in Castilla-La Mancha.
Additionally, I enhanced my clinical management training by completing a Master’s in Health Services Administration and Management at Pompeu Fabra University (2013-14). I also began my teaching experience as an Honorary and Associate Collaborating Professor in Radiology, Physical Therapy, and Onco-Hematology courses at the Faculty of Medicine, UCLM (2012-2015).
In November 2014, I was appointed as a member of the National Radiation Oncology Commission, representing the Human Resources Commission of the National Health System.
In July 2015, I joined as Section Head at Hospital Universitario La Paz and subsequently, in December 2016, I obtained the position of Head of Department, which I currently hold. In this center, I have maintained an innovative approach with technological equipment renewal and the implementation of pioneering techniques such as MRI-guided radiotherapy, operating since December 2021 as the only national center, with very few units functioning at the European and global level, and the upcoming incorporation of a Proton Therapy Unit, positioning us as the department with the best technological equipment nationally.
During this period, I also improved my clinical management skills by completing the XIX High Management Program in Healthcare Institutions, IESE Business School, University of Navarra (2019). During this time, the Radiation Oncology Department at HULP piloted the implementation of the LEAN methodology in clinical management, eliminated paper with the Mosaiq departmental management network connected to the hospital system, became the first department of this specialty in the Madrid region certified in quality management by ISO 9001, patient safety UNE 179003:2013, and risk analysis in radiotherapy for 3D technique (MARR) and special techniques (MARRTA).
